In Memory of Val Savage

On Monday, August 11, The 49th Dragons gathered for their annual Bute Island picnic - an annual tradition amongst all the teams consisting of an evening of paddling, food, laughter and connection. This year, though, their journey carried a deeper purpose. The 49th Dragons came together to honour their dear teammate and friend, Val Savage, who sadly lost her long and hard-fought battle with cancer on July 28.

Val was a long-time paddler with the 49th Dragons, and her presence on and off the water touched every one. True to her wishes, there was no formal celebration of life, but the team found their own way to say goodbye, paddling in her memory, letting the rhythm of our strokes carry thoughts and love out to sea.

The evening was both beautiful and challenging. Strong winds and intense heat put the team to the test, making the evening a bit of an adventure. But with a full boat of committed paddlers, they made it, together, as always.

Once on the island, the team shared a toast to Val, telling stories, remembering her spirit, and holding tight to the many memories she’s left us. On the paddle home, each paddler released a flower into the ocean.

Val’s voice, energy and her courage will always be part of the 49th Dragons.

Let it Ride, Val!

Paddling back, The 49th Dragons each released a flower into the water, sending memories with the tide.
